Christmas Tree Day at Drysdale's Tree Farm
Sunday, December 8, 2019 5:00 am

Like many families, getting a real Christmas tree from a tree farm is one of our annual holiday traditions. We like to make a day (or half day) out of it by going for brunch as well. The first Saturday of December is Christmas Tree Day in Canada so it's the perfect time to go go tree hunting (so you can enjoy your tree for a while but it's still fresh and green at Christmas.)

Tis the season for a lot of stressful shopping. As nice as it is to give and receive gifts, sometimes it can feel like you’re just buying a lot of...stuff. As cliche as it sounds, sometimes the best gift you can give really is time with your loved ones.

My holiday gift guide is chock full of experiences that your loved ones will really appreciate, no matter their interests.

During the holiday season, it always seems like there are 1,000 things to do, from shopping to family visits to marathoning Hallmark movies, on top of your regular life. I'm not a big fan of winter (well, specifically, the cold) but I'm a big believer that it's important to soak in the season.

It's always nice to do something different and take in some festive events. Here are my picks for some of the must-attend events to help you make the most of the holiday season.

November Round-Up: Handmade Markets for Your Holiday Shopping
Thursday, November 7, 2019 5:00 am

Can you hear the cash registers chime? It’s holiday shopping time! If you’re like me, you like to hit as many handmade markets as you can during the shopping season. Compared to the major malls, a handmade market feels so much more festive. While I love the Christmas season and accompanying holidays, I’m not a fan of the feeling of excess consumerism I sometimes get after holiday binge shopping. When I’m supporting small businesses, the shopping feels a bit more thoughtful.

Autumn at Night: Pumpkins After Dark & Other After-Hours Ideas for Fall
Wednesday, October 30, 2019 4:00 am

One of my favourite things about Autumn is that it feels different throughout the day. In the daylight it’s crisp yet comforting, making you want to cozy up in a warm sweater, but at night, it can be magical.

I for one really enjoy the dusky side of Fall, even if it’s sometimes harder to soak in the changing colours. On our latest excursion we visited Pumpkins After Dark, an outdoor exhibit with thousands of hand carved pumpkins.

A Spooktacular Day at Mountsberg Conservation Area
Tuesday, October 22, 2019 4:00 am

Living in Halton we’re blessed with incredible scenery and it’s never more stunning than in the Fall. We love to drive through the escarpment to enjoy the colours, but it’s even better when we’re driving to one of the many local scenic parks.

One of our favourites all year round is Mountsberg Conservation Centre. I’m a big fan of places that are interactive, and Mountsberg has lots to see while you’re enjoying the fresh air. They also have a number of popular events year-round including the Halloween event. Being huge fans of this particular holiday, we had to check it out. Here are some of the highlights from our excursion.

Milton’s Hidden Gem: Wildhagen Greenhouses and Adventure Gardens
Tuesday, October 8, 2019 4:00 pm

I  am so excited to share today’s post! We recently had a free Saturday and while it wasn’t too cool, it was one of those drizzly days where you want an indoor activity option nearby.

My friend told me about Wildhagen Greenhouses in Milton, and though it’s not far from where we live, I’d never heard of it. I couldn’t agree more with their tag line, “Milton’s hidden gem.” It turns out that it’s far more than just a greenhouse (though visiting a local nursery is always a nice way to spend an hour.) Wildhagen, a family-run business, is also home to the Adventure Gardens, a truly magical - and expansive - family playland. We thought it would make the perfect excursion for a day where we weren’t up to driving too far. My consensus? Even if you live further away than Burlington or Milton, it’s totally worth the trek.

Kitchener Waterloo Family Day Trip Part 2: Snyder’s Farm
Thursday, September 26, 2019 7:00 am

Fall is hands down my favourite season. As soon I sense the first hint of crispness in the air, I’m ready to pull out my pumpkin decor and jump right into sweater weather. One of the best parts of the season is the abundance of Autumn excursions and events.

One of my first Fall outings each year is always to a local farm. Luckily, living in Halton, I never have to go far to find fields of pumpkins, hay rides and farm fresh treats. As I mentioned in my post Kitchener Waterloo Family Day Trip Part 1, I wanted to go somewhere outside of Halton for a daytrip. We had an amazing time at The Museum in Kitchener for the first half of the day and decided to check out another major attraction in the area.

We wanted to spend our afternoon somewhere a bit different, with lots of activities, and Snyder’s Family Farm was the perfect choice. While many farms have similar features, Snyder’s really is on a whole other level. Even the standard farm experiences are more thought out and entertaining than many farms I’ve been to. Here are just a few of the top activities included with admission - and why we loved them.

Kitchener Waterloo Family Day Trip Part 1: The Museum
Friday, September 20, 2019 10:00 pm

Recently I decided to take my family out for an Ontario family day trip and I wanted to look outside of our typical GTA getaways.

After much research, we landed on heading to Kitchener-Waterloo region. My goal was to find something that would be fun for both kids and adults, and while we all enjoyed the trip quite a lot, I will admit that it ended up being pretty kid-centric.

Our first stop on this excursion was The Museum in Kitchener. This is a fantastic affordable, family-friendly museum. If we lived closer, we would buy the season pass and go every weekend. There were so many kids activities for little ones of all ages (plus lots of after hours events for adults).

Hidden Wonders In Dundas Valley Conservation Area
Friday, August 30, 2019 10:00 pm

There’s nothing like a nature hike to clear your mind and make you feel more grounded. Even if you’re not a big fan of strenuous hikes, a leisurely stroll through the woods is a great way to enjoy some fresh air.

While I love the scenery of a tree-filled forest, I admit that I don’t often prioritize this type of outing. I’m often more inclined to enjoy the beauty of the farmland and escarpment near my home from the comfort of my car during an afternoon drive. This has the added benefit of not requiring me to plan footwear in advance.

After visiting the Dundas Valley Conversation Area recently, however, I’m a complete convert. Trekking through the trails, there’s a new natural wonder around each corner and over every hill. What really sets it apart from most hiking haunts is that there’s so much variety. There’s so much more to enjoy than just a walk through the trees (which really is enough in and of itself – even if you’re not a big hiker.)

About Me

My whole life, I’ve always loved to be on the go. Growing up in Dufferin County, I was raised on countryside treks and excursions to charming small towns. Now residing in Halton, I love to explore the hidden gems and quirky events across Ontario. I firmly believe that travelling doesn’t always require a lengthy plane trip and hope to showcase all of the beauty and excitement that’s just a short excursion away from our own backyards.
